Some home sellers
feel they
have
a safe harbor for clutter in
the closets. They
often ask: “Do
buyers really look in closets?” Absolutely! Your closet can make or break a
sale. With some buyers, they’re
next in importance to the kitchen.
If your closets have that disorganized and cluttered look try the following:
- Of course, everything must go. Leave only a few must-have items hanging up or on shelves.
- Remove shoe holders and anything that clutters the closet floor.
- If your closets are dark and depressing, check out closet organizers at a home improvement center.
- Don’t forget to shine or replace the closet doorknobs and other hardware.
- If you have bi-folds or sliding closet doors, make sure they work perfectly and don’t pop out of the track when opened. They should work smoothly and quietly.
- Remove anything on the back of the door: posters, mirrors, shoe holders, and so on.
- Replace inadequate light fixtures with new models that give off plenty of light.
Always
assume that the buyers will open the closets and look in! Storage is important and they
want to know if
their stuff will fit.
